About FOSSGIS e.V.

FOSSGIS e.V. was founded in 2000 as the GRASS-Anwender-Vereinigung e.V. (GAV), a user association for the GRASS GIS software. It was entered in the Mainz register of associations on 18 January 2001.

In September 2008 the association took the name FOSSGIS e.V. Its stated aim is to promote free GIS software and free geodata. Today it is the official local chapter and point of contact for the OpenStreetMap project in Germany and represents the OSGeo Foundation as its local chapter in the German-speaking region.
